Bienvenida a Peru!

After many months of wondering if I would ever actually be in Peru, I have arrived. Despite spending a week freaking out over what to pack, temporarily experiencing insomnia from eagerness, and even landing in Washington D.C. for staging, I couldn’t process that as of June 5th, I would be in Peru. I was not alone. The running joke has been, “Has it hit you yet?”

Well, it hit me. No, not on the plane leaving D.C., nor even when we boarded the international flight in Miami. Not when Immigration stamped my shiny new Peace Corps passport, nor getting the fast pass through Customs. It happened when I heard the Peace Corps Peru Staff and Volunteers cheering for us as we exited the secure area. In that moment, I felt at home.

Confession: I might’ve choked back a few tears. I am totally blaming this on being exhausted and delirious.

As we continue through the training process, I’m sure it’ll sink in a lot more that this country will be my home until at least August 2016. There are many more emotional moments to come—meeting my host family, becoming frustrated with my Spanish (or lack thereof, thanks 7 years of middle school through college Spanish classes), and eventually moving to my site.

With so many new experiences to come, I can’t help but be excited!

With love from Peru,

B
